American Psychologist John D. Gartner, who taught classes about personality disorders for more than 28 yrs. at John Hopkins University, recently had this to say about President Trump. “If I took out the DSM (Diagnostic & Statistical Manual on Mental Disorders), and I wanted to create a Frankenstein Monster. If I wanted to create the most dangerous leader that could possibly be imagined and I had a free hand to mix and match any set of diagnoses and symptoms, I couldn't improve upon Donald Trump, he needs a psychiatric evaluation”.
President Trump exhibits 6 of the 7 traits of Antisocial Personality Disorder and you only need 3 to be given that diagnosis! They include, a lack of remorse, failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors, deceitfulness and repeated lying, impulsivity, irritability and aggressiveness, a reckless disregard for the safety of others and consistent irresponsibility. Sounds a lot like someone we know.
Do the following symptoms apply to the man currently occupying the White House, with complete command of our Nation's Nuclear arsenal? Argumentative and defensive, quick to anger and hostility, hypersensitive to criticism and preoccupied about the loyalty of others. Let's face it, Donald Trump could be the poster-boy for Paranoid Personality Disorder.
In Greek mythology, we learn the story of Narcissus, a vain young man, that fell so in love with his own reflection, it tragically led to his own demise. In the current chapter of America's story, we have our own version of narcissism, in the personification of Donald Trump. A man preoccupied with his own brilliance, has a grandiose sense of self-importance, is arrogant without empathy and requires constant admiration and praise. In the 2020 Presidential election, the American people will ultimately write the final chapter of this all too real Political Tragedy.
Will Rogers once said, ”If the Lord can see his way clear to bless the Republican party the way it's been carrying on, then the rest of us ought to get it without even asking”. In 2017, Psychologist John D. Gartner sent a petition with 41,000 signatures to Washington D.C. which stated: We, the undersigned mental health professionals, believe in our professional judgement Donald Trump manifests a serious mental illness that renders him psychologically incapable of competently discharging the duties of President of the United States, and we respectfully request he be removed from office”. Now that's what I would call a very troubling diagnosis.
