Farristown mourns loss of student

Farristown Middle School is mourning the death of seventh-grader Justin Tillery, who died from injuries he sustained in a car accident in Jackson County last weekend.

According to a release from the Kentucky State Police, Tillery, 13, and his father Dustin Tillery were in a 2001 Nissan Frontier that collided with a 1999 International Flatbed Truck after it crossed the center line on KY Highway 290 in McKee. Dustin Tiller was pronounced dead at the scene and Justin Tillery later passed away at the University of Kentucky Hospital.

Berea Community Schools shut down

Superintendent Diane Hatchett made the decision to close the schools in the Berea Independent School District Tuesday and Wednesday saying, “significant numbers of faculty, staff, and students are experiencing illness this week including strep throat and the stomach virus.” More than 20 teachers, substitutes, and cafeteria workers called in sick Monday. Deep cleaning of the schools was done before students returned to classes on Thursday.

Former Sheriff Nelson O’Donnell dies at age 67

Former Madison County Sheriff Nelson O’Donnell passed away last Thursday at age 67 at his residence.

O’Donnell served as sheriff from 2006-2010 following a long career in law enforcement.
