Berea Mayor Bruce Fraley declared May 13-19 as Police Week in Berea. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week it falls as Police Week. In honor of all fallen soldiers and their families, United States flags should be flown at half-staff. There are 541 names of fallen heroes on the Kentucky Law Enforcement memorial in Richmond. Since the first recorded death in 1791, almost 20,000 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty, including Berea Town Marshall John A. Collins, who was killed on Aug. 23, 1914 within the city limits of Berea.
