Brian Abney

Madison County clerk's office employee Brian Abney counted ballots at the Madison County Courthouse on Oct. 22 in Richmond.

Madison County Clerk Kenny Barger certified the petition recall on the property tax Friday morning and the Madison County Fiscal Court has 15 days to decide to amend the 11.4 cent property tax hike or put the issue before voters in November of 2020.

According to Barger, his office certified 3,876 signatures, 10 days after 6,478 ballots were turned in by the "Stop the Madison County Tax Increase" group on Oct. 22.

"The petitions were very organized," Barger said. "We had very few rejections."

Barger praised his office for getting the petitions certified in less than two weeks, considering the timing of Tuesday's General Election. He also wanted to make sure tax bills could be delivered to residents in a timely manner.

"Everybody pitched in and helped," Barger said. "I've got an awesome group."

The next Fiscal Court meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 12 at the Berea City Annex.
