The Madison Southern Eagles learned the hard way that no lead is safe. On Friday, the Eagles (0-2) saw a 21-7 halftime advantage slip away in the fourth quarter as Southwestern rallied to a 35-34 overtime win Friday night.

Coach Jon Clark said his squad must learn how to close out games.

“We have some guys that just don’t know what it takes to win at the end of a game,” he said.

“(They) have to push themselves more and practice and get into a physical shape that it takes to play high school football.”

Despite the loss, Clark said the team showed drastic improvement over the previous week.

Quarterback Tobias Storm threw for 118 yards and a pair of scores. Adrian Jones rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns, while Cameron Holbrook scored a touchdown and finished with 37 yards rushing.

Jayshaun Ethridge and Walt Smith each caught scoring passes. Ethridge also recovered a fumble.

Southern returns to action Friday when it travels to Madison Central for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Berea slays Green Dragons

The Berea Pirates made it two straight after knocking off the Harlan Green Dragons Friday night.

Jaylen Whitaker rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown and threw for 79 yards in the win. Jaiden Cunningham rushed for 100 yards and added a pair of scores. Timmy Thompson caught nine passes for 77 yards.

The Pirates will be looking to start the season 3-0 when they host Caverna Saturday at 2 p.m.
