On July 12th, 2019, the Owsley County 4-H Natural Resource & Environmental Science Academy hosted their 1st Annual River Sweep.

The participants collected trash and debris in a 4 mile long kayaking adventure. This event started in the bottoms just past the Booneville Water Treatment Plant and ended at the Fish Creek boat ramp.

During this event the participants learned the importance of water quality and the impact that pollution had on their community water source.

Sherry Becknell- EFNEP Assistant and Tracey Turner -SNAP-ED Assistant, conducted a lesson on “Think Your Drink” before leaving on the float. This lesson paired well with their activity and taught their participants the importance of staying hydrated when being physically active.

Lee County Tourism Director Dedra Brandenburg for assisted in chaperoning the float as well as sponsoring shirts and giving an insight to all of the area river system.

Owsley County 4-H program wants to thank all of its participants and volunteers for allowing them to have another successful program.
