For the first time since 1997 the Owsley County Golf team will send a member to the Leachman Buick KHSAA state golf championship to be held at Bowling Green Country Club. Andrew Noe fired a 79 and qualified for the state by winning in a playoff. Andrew is the first golfer since Eric Mason qualified for state in 1997. Andrew will tee off at Bowling Green Country Club on Oct 11 at 11:48 cst.
The Volley Owls had a huge week of action. The Volley Owls competed in the Buckhorn Lake Invitational which saw the ladies square off against Jackson City in round 1. The Owls came out focused and motivated matching the Lady Tigers point for point before eventually dropping the match to the eventual tournament champions 0-2 (25-22,25-7) That loss would drop Volleyowls to the loser bracket and a match-up with the Lady Devils of Robertson County out of region 10. The match would take the full three sets to complete the Volleyowls would drop set 1 21-25 but would bounce back to win set 25-20. This would set up a third and deciding set. The Volley Owls came out on fire racing out to an early lead and holding a 14-13 advantage. A controversial double hit led to Robertson County tying up the set and going on to win the set 17-15. (21-25, 25,20, 17-15). With a quick turnaround and pride on the line the Volleyowls would be in another battle against the Lady Cavaliers of Jenkins. Jenkins would take set 1 23-25, but a little motivation from Coach Caudell would see the Volley Owls take set 2 and 3 and winning the match 2-1 (23-25, 25-20, 15-13)
The Volley Owls had a big time district match-up with district rival Lee County on Monday night. The game would be back and forth through out the night seeing each team exchange leads throughout. At the end of set 1 the Volley Owls would defeat the Lady Kats 27-25 and take a 1-0 in the best of 5 match. Set 2 saw the Volley Kats take control with a barrage of service aces and kills which resulted in the Lady Kats taking set 2 25-18. A refocused Volley Owl squad. After a rash of unforced serving errors by the Lady Kats and solid defense the Volley Owls regained a 2-1 advantage after taking set 3 25-21. Set 4 saw the Lady Kats get back on track taking set 4 25-14. The fifth and final set would decide the highly contested battle between the two district foes. Owsley would come out firing jumping out to a 10-4 lead. The Lady Kats would rally back to tie the set 11-11 before the Volley Owls put the final nail in the coffin and closing the Lady Kats out 15-12. This win gave the Volley Owls their first district win of the season and first district win since the 2016 season.
MS Girls Basketball
Lady Owls continue their winning ways by dominating Breathitt County 60-34. The Lady Owls used pressure defense to jump out to a 15 point lead at the half and stretched it out from there. The Lady Owls were led in scoring by Carly Smith and Addison Terry pouring in 17 points a piece. Shelby Murray contributed 10 and a game high 14 rebounds, Blakesley Whitaker added 8pts and 8 rebounds while Aaliyah Lynch and Tanisha Back added 6 points and 1 point respectively.
The Lady Owls made the short trek to district rival Lee County on Monday the 30th, and the battle would be as short as the trip. The Lady Owls blowed the game open early opening up a 23-8 halftime lead and went on to win 45-21. Carly Smith led all scorers with a game high 21 points. Addison Terry poured in 10, Shelby Murray added 8 points and a game high 12 rebounds. Aaliyah Lynch, Blakesley Whitaker, and Kailey Shouse added 2 points a piece.
Mountain View would be the next victim in the path of the red hot Lady Owls. The Leslie County feeder school would see the Lady Owls open up a 31-10 half time lead and would put the game in Cadillac mode the rest of the way. At the end of the night the Lady Owls would out pace Mountain View and win going away 47-31. Carly led all scorers with 16 points. Addison Terry continued her red hot shooting by pouring in 12 points on the night. Aaliyah Lynch added 6. Shelby Murray added 4 points and 9 rebounds. Blakesley Whitaker with 8 points and a game high 10 rebounds, Kailey Shouse added 1 point in the win.
