I have been writing “The Babbling Belle” on and off since 2017. It is probably the most favorite part of my job that I get to do, my writing, and that says a lot, because I really LOVE my job. It is not always easy, because people do not always like to hear what I have to say, but I love it just the same. Actually, let me take that back, my MOST favorite part of my job is my staff! Writing, is my second favorite part of my job.
Anyway, I typically write about a general subject that includes my ties to Lee County and my work there, but today I want to focus on Owsley County. I took over the Booneville Sentinel almost a year ago, and it has been an adventure, to say the least. However, the best part about taking the Sentinel under my wing too, is learning about Booneville and the
people that call it home. They are some of the sweetest and most dedicated people that I have ever met. Yes, it is a very small town, but they work hard at making it the best small town that it can be.
When I first added the Sentinel to my workload, people were like, “why are you doing that?” News print is dying and besides, you already run The Beattyville Enterprise. (The answer was pretty much within their question. If print was dying, why am I running TWO papers with a staff? We do not work for free! My kid would get very mad if there wasn’t money for him to eat or buy things with.) I chose to run the Sentinel, along with the Enterprise, because #1 my son was starting elementary school, so I had more free time, #2 I like a challenge, especially when it involves loving what I do, and #3 I fell in love with the people the first time I set at the desk in my Booneville office.
We are fortunate to live in a culture where print still thrives, but also, have the resources to provide a digital daily for those that are more electronic savvy. Our digital daily is amazing, because of the contents and convenience alone. I mean, think about it, a 24/7 website dedicated to news exclusive to Eastern Kentucky that consists of 8 community newspapers that feed the news to the website all hours of the day. No news outlet from Lexington or Louisville is going to give you that specialized down home coverage like we do.
Anyway, back to my point, I love all things Booneville and Owsley County. I love writing for the people, and keep them informed of all things local. Mind you, Lisa does more writing than I do, because I can only do so much in a day, and a six year old little boy is the ultimate boss of me.
Sometimes we may write things that you may not like, but it is our job to keep the community informed of anything that affects them. We weigh ALL the content going into the paper before it is published. We do not take any information printed, lightly. However, I do prefer my “Babbling Belle” commentary to be a little more lighthearted.
As my one year anniversary at the Sentinel approaches, I just want to give a round of thanks to first, my Associate Editor, Lisa Robinson. None of this is possible without you. Secondly, to the columnists like Deron Mays (I would be lost without you!), Gary Miller, Betty Crabtree (my rock), and Chris Dooley, your devotion to this paper is priceless, and I love reading every word you write. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thirdly, a big shout out to our advertisers that help make us be the best that we can be for your community, And lastly, our readers, you own our hearts. You are the driving force behind all that we do. Without you, we would not be here, so we thank you with everything we got within us, and we look forward to providing you with a quality newspaper for years to come. Happy Reading!
