Owsley County School Board Recognizes Teachers

On Tuesday evening at 6 pm the Owsley County School Board met in regular session.  The meeting was called to order by board chairperson, Joyce Campbell.  A motion was made and carried to approve the agenda as presented.  Another motion was made and carried to approve the minutes from the March 12th meeting.  Then the board had some discussion on when to schedule a special called board meeting to work on a tentative budget which is due by May 30, 2019.  After discussion, a motion was made and carried to meet on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 6 pm at the board office.  

     Next on the agenda was the New Teacher Program Recognition.  Each new teacher had been paired with a teacher at their school that served as their mentor for their first year of teaching. Crystal Gumm was paired with Anita Spence, Robert Smith was paired with Megan Bowling and Tyler Roberts was paired with Kim Johnson.  Each new teacher received a certificate from the board and each mentor teacher received a certificate.  The new teachers had nothing but compliments for not only their mentor but for the rest of the staff as well.  They stated that any questions they had were answered either by their mentor or another teacher at their school.  Robert Smith stated that he had been blessed to have done his 

student teaching with Megan Bowling.  He says that he was even more blessed to get to work with her again as his mentor.  Tyler said, “I am so thankful to have gotten to work with Kim Johnson.” Crystal Gumm is working with Special Education.  There is additional paperwork to do with special ed.  Crystal said, “Thank you to all who helped me.”

 
 

     Chad Mason discussed the construction projects that have been going on at the schools.  Mr. Mason says that we are hoping to have the construction projects finished by the 15th.  Our new chiller ran flawlessly last year and we are getting ready to turn it on for this year.  We have spent some money this year but this should give us a lot more time before we have to do these repairs again.  We have 99% LED lighting in our system.  We have installed new heat pumps and hope to cut our energy costs in half.   We have sprayed for termites at the schools and we are keeping an eye on that.  A motion was made and carried to approve the application & certification for payment on the construction projects and to approve the contractor's purchase order payment.

     The financial report was given and a motion was made and carried to approve the report.  A motion was made and carried to approve the superintendent's travel.  A motion was made and carried to accept the survey results of the seniors to have Graduation on Friday, May 24th, 2019 at 7:00 pm at the high school gym.  A motion was also made and carried to approve up to 10 NTI Days for the 2019-2020 school year.  

     The school board reviewed the SBDM reports, the AirMedCare Network Municipal Site Membership, the KEDC Membership agreement for 2019-2020, the Summer Feeding Program Starting in May 2019 and MOA Dual Credit with Hazard Community and Technical College.  

 

     The board has sent out Intent Letters to see which teachers are coming back next year.  Wade Caudell resigned as the Assistant Volleyball Coach but was employed as the OCHS Head Volleyball Coach.  Bethany Martin was employed as a part-time bus monitor.  Glenda Dean was approved as a volunteer for volleyball.  Julie Patton has announced her retirement effective June 30, 2019.  May 13th through May 17th is testing week in Owsley County.  Please make sure that your children are at school each day.  May 23rd at 5:00 pm the 5th Grade Promotion will take place at the elementary school.  This will be followed by the 5th Grade dance at 6:00 pm.  There will be a 6th Grade Ceremony at the high school.  They are talking about the last day of school for this.
