Sheriff Paul Hays

“The credit does not belong to the critic! The credit belongs to the one who is actually in the arena!” We had another loss of life on KY 290 this week. KSP, who is a great partner to our office, is completing the investigative report on this accident, with help from Deputy Zack Bryant. Deputy Bryant helped remove the child from the vehicle and into the ambulance, which likely was instrumental in saving the child’s life. I am very proud of Zack and all our deputies and I recognize the stress attached to such terrible situations. The general public can not understand the pressure that is placed upon police officers during such critical incidents. At last report, the child appears to be on the road to recovery. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the person who died in the tragic accident and for the small child. We pray for complete healing for the child and comfort to the family. God bless.

We continue to follow up on leads from thefts of vehicles, guns, trailer, ATV, household items, etc. As long as I can remember, there has been an element of society who willfully takes from others with no remorse. They are the underbelly of society. It is very difficult to recover stolen property, particularly when there are no identifying numbers. Therefore, please take time to create a file of identifying numbers for all your equipment. We encourage the use of video cameras at every home and we encourage neighborhood watches. We should all look out for the property of our neighbors and report unusual or suspect activity. When you see such an event occurring, please call 606-287-9979 and report it to our Dispatch Center. That information will get to the nearest available unit, either SO or KSP, and we will respond promptly. Thieves need to know everyone is watching them and need to believe the police are right on them. Help us to help You.

Thieves would not be so anxious to steal something, were it not for people who knowingly purchase stolen items. Not everyone who purchases an item that is stolen does so knowing the item is stolen, but there are many who simply do not care. They look for a good deal without concern for the innocent party who had it taken from them. The people who knowingly buy stolen proper are no better than the thieves who steal it. You can help us by reporting people who buy stolen property. You can do this anonymously by calling the office to report information without giving your name. We only want the information and your information just may help us recover stolen property and bring justice to the outlaws who steal it.

When the road is wet, SLOW DOWN! Almost every serious traffic accident occurs because the driver is traveling too fast for road conditions. Many accidents are the result of distracted driving or operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, but accidents increase during bad weather. Always wear your seat belts! They can save your life. We want to do everything in our power to keep our citizens alive and safe..

Last week the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to fifty-two calls for service. We answered untold numbers of phone calls with questions or concerns, opened two criminal investigations, investigated five traffic accidents and arrested two individuals on various charges. We transported several people for mental health issues and those who face criminal charges. We appreciate the support from our county as we try our best to protect and serve the people.
