It’s Relay time, Breathitt County! This year’s Relay for Life of Breathitt County will take place Friday, June 7th, at Douthitt Park. The event will kick off with a community walk at 6 PM. We’d love for you to join us! You don’t have to be a member of a team. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate our survivors, remember those who have lost the fight, and fight back against this disease that has affected everyone in some way. Our theme this year is “Hope Starts at Home”, a reminder that Breathitt County has been a dedicated member of this fight for years.

The Survivor Ceremony at 630 celebrates our special guests. We celebrate each cancer survivor, whether they are newly diagnosed or if they have been cancer- free for years. These special individuals are the reason we Relay. If you’re a cancer survivor, we’d love to invite you to come join us. Registration will be at the event beginning at 6 PM. You can contact Dana Fugate at 606-438-0428 for more information.

Following the Survivor ceremony, there will be activities for the whole family as well as fun and fellowship. Relay is a time for community togetherness. Throughout the year, our 12 teams have worked hard fundraising, and this evening gives everyone a chance to come together and celebrate the work and progress that has been made.

The luminaria ceremony begins at 10 PM. This special ceremony involves the lighting of a candle in a sand-filled bag. Each bag represents a life that has been touched by cancer, either in honor of someone who is a survivor or in memory of someone. The bags line the track at the park, lights twinkling in the dark to show that hope shines bright even in the darkest of moments. Each name is read out loud, and the ceremony is concluded with a slide show featuring pictures submitted by family and loved ones. Luminaria can be purchased during the event for a $5 donation to the American Cancer Society.

This year’s Relay will conclude at 2 AM. Please plan to stop by Douthitt Park for this year’s Relay for Life, Friday, June 7th. Money raised goes to the American Cancer Society to fund research, prevention, education, and services, such as the Hope Lodge in Lexington, KY. For more information about the American Cancer Society, visit or call 1-800-2345.
