A police chase Saturday night ensued following a burglary attempt on Horse Creek and landed a London man in jail.
James Smith, 39, of 90 Goins Lane, London, allegedly attempted to burglarize a barn belonging to Sammy Gregory on Horse Creek. Gregory then called 911 to report the incident and that he was giving chase to an ATV.
City police officer Antonio Dodson observed an ATV on Ky. 80 near Sibert’s Grocery that matched the description of the one fleeing from the attempted burglary scene with Gregory close behind.
Officer Dodson attempted to stop the ATV, but Smith was driving in a reckless manner and fled up Paw Paw road.
The chase ran through Paw Paw Road onto Ephram Creek where Smith tried to elude the officers by going onto a logging road.
The officers located the ATV in a large mudhole approximately one mile from the roadway. They located Smith hiding over a hillside. Smith refused their commands to give up and resisted arrest, according to the report.
Smith was charged with fleeing or evading police 1st degree(motor vehicle); fleeing or evading police 2nd degree (on foot); resisting arrest; criminal mischief 2nd degree (three counts; various all-terrain vehicle violations; failure to not wear a helmet; reckless driving.
Assisting officer Dodson were MPD officers Jeremy Garrison and Ryan Jackson.
