Frankfort, May 14, 2019 – Volunteers of America Mid-States is expanding addiction recovery programs into underserved areas in Southeastern Kentucky. Aetna Better Health of Kentucky, one of the nation’s largest health care benefits companies, is helping to make this much-needed expansion possible and will announce a major gift to Volunteers of America at an event Tuesday afternoon in the rotunda of the State Capitol in Frankfort. Senate President Robert Stivers, Secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services Adam Meier and other key state leaders and stakeholders will be present for the event.
Freedom House provides state-of-the-art and nationally recognized addiction recovery treatment and care to pregnant and parenting mothers working to overcome substance use disorder. Volunteers of America is about to begin construction on a facility that will be located in Manchester in Clay County and will be the first program of its type in the region.
“Volunteers of America is absolutely committed to serving women in need throughout our state. It doesn’t matter where you live – if you are pregnant and parenting and seeking treatment, Volunteers of America wants to be there for you. We are so grateful to Aetna for their support and their amazing generosity that will make this truly innovative and important project possible,” said Jennifer Hancock, President and CEO of Volunteers of America.
Freedom House in Louisville currently serves more than 40 women and the project in Clay County will be the first outside of Louisville. Southeastern Kentucky has been particularly hard hit by the opioid and addiction crisis yet still has a shortage of treatment and recovery programs. The Aetna gift will be critical to funding the comprehensive services and care pregnant and parenting mothers receive at Freedom House.
