[Archery] Brandt stars as archery team takes 4th at MSC Indoors

A standout weekend by Lane Brandt helped spark a fourth-place finish for the Union Archery team at the three-day Mid-South Indoor Championships, which concluded Sunday.

The Bulldogs finished with a three-day score of 61. Cumberlands took first with 205, 60 points better than of runner-up Pikeville.

Brandt earned a pair of wins. His individual highlight was scoring a perfect 150 in the final round of compound college men's competition, and he needed every point to squeak out a 150-149 win over Austin Taylor of Lindsey Wilson.

Brandt and Taylor finished tied atop the overall Compound Men's rankings with scores of 592. Brandt's teammates Chase Herndon and Daniel Carlton were right behind, finishing third and fourth with scores of 591 and 590 respectively.

Brandt also teamed with Ashley Coffing for a first-place finish in mixed compound team play, with the pair defeating the Cumberlands duo of Marissa Harding and Cole Zeug in the finals. In the college men's compound team finals, Brandt, Herndon and Carlton were third, defeating Taylor and a pair of Lindsey Wilson teammates 233-229 in the consolation finals.

Coffing also earned another top-two team finish, as she also teamed with Jalyn Sharpe and Rachel Withers to take second in compound college women's competition. The trio was defeated 234-230 to the Cumberlands group of Amanda Newland, Jazmine Trinidad and Marissa Harding in the final round.

Coffing was also the top individual finisher on the women's side, placing fourth in compound women's head-to-head. She tied Pikeville's Alyssa Sturgill in the consolation bracket, losing via tiebreaker.

Herndon, who fell to Brandt 149-145 in the semifinals, took third in compound men's head-to-head play with a consolation round win over Zeug. Kyle Coffey also had a third-place showing in head-to-head, beating Nathan Bush of Lindsey Wilson in the barebow consolation round.

Also finishing in the top-four was the fixed pins women's team of Abigail WardRuthie Masengale and Savannah King, who took fourth.

The Bulldogs return to Madisonville on Feb. 18-19 for the USA Archery Indoor Nationals.
