The 2019 Knox County Chamber of Commerce’s Woman of the Year is local businesswoman Marie Mills.
Mills counts G & M Oil, Parkway Plaza, and VM & M Rock Quarry among the companies she’s been a part of. Tuesday, November 19, she will be awarded the Woman of the Year Award at the Knox County Chamber of Commerce Banquet.
Mills’ business roots go way back, her parents having ran Garland Store for years.
When she was 17, she married her sweetheart Vance; who soon entered the drilling business. Mills took on the role of personal secretary, record keeper, payroll, and transporter. As the company grew, so did her responsibilities and influence. Mills played a major roll in hiring and firing at the business. Even today she continues to grow her resume with her family opening an event space in Laurel County.
Mills places great importance on faith and family, having raised two daughters. She prefers her large family to spend their summers by her pool, her authority earning her the nickname, “The President.” This is not to say she’s opposed to travel, having visited Japan and Australia in her busy life.
Mills is known for her love of family and Knox County, a place she has been proud to see grow over the years.
