A Barbourville man was sentenced for sexual abuse charges involving a child under 12 years old in Knox County Circuit Court on Wednesday, November 6.
As part of a plea agreement, John M. Engle pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree sexual abuse of a victim under 12 years old in exchange for five years probation and was placed on Kentucky’s Sex Offender Registry for 20 years.
Before accepting the plea deal, Engle was also facing one count of first-degree sexual abuse, one count of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sodomy, and one count of first-degree incest.
Engle’s defense attorney filed a motion during Wednesday’s sentencing asking that the court allow Engle to remain in contact with his other grandchildren not involved in the case.
Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Brandon Jones said the state plans to fight against that motion.
