Two women are behind bars after a three-year-old was allegedly found walking around unsupervised in the parking lot outside Catron Square apartments in Barbourville.
When Barbourville Police responded to the complaint of a small child walking around in a parking lot on August 27, Officer Adam Townsley found the child walking next to the road wearing nothing but a diaper. Townsley located the toddler’s home after a maintenance man advised him which apartment the child lived in.
Upon going to the apartment, Townsley found the door open, knocked and yelled but received no answer. Inside the apartment, he found the child’s grandmother, Jennifer Gambrel, asleep, and subsequently also found the child’s mother, Maxina Gambrel asleep. The mother stated she had taken Benadryl the night before due to sickness.
While searching the home, deputies also found a pipe containing residue believed to be marijuana and a plastic bag containing pills. According to deputies, Jennifer allegedly admitted she illegally purchased them.
Jennifer Gambrel is charged with criminal abuse of a child 12 or under, possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. She is being held on a $25,000 cash bond, and is scheduled to appear in Knox Circuit Court on September 27.
Maxina Gambrel is charged with criminal abuse of child 12 or under. She is being held on a $10,000 cash bond, and has a hearing date set for September 27.
Both Jennifer Gambrel and Maxina Gambrel were lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.
