The Kiwanis of Middlesboro Club turns 100 years old in February 2021 and the Club is making plans for a yearlong celebration. Kiwanis is a global service organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis was originally founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan and the local Middlesboro Club was started 6 years later in 1921.
According to Jim Melton, the current Kiwanis of Middlesboro Club President, the Club is currently meeting virtually and not face-to-face during the COVID – 19 pandemic but does plan to complete several hands-on service projects this summer. In the past, Kiwanis has funded one of the shelters at Fords Wood Park, provided an annual college scholarship to a deserving Middlesboro High School senior, and funded the very active Key Club programs at Middlesboro High School and J. Frank White Academy. Key Club is the high school version of Kiwanis. Over its 100 year history, the Kiwanis of Middlesboro Club has been fortunate to have strong leaders that have helped make the Club an important part of the community.
