The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) designates April as Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.
Here are some ways you can help stop cruelty to animals.
-Get involved and become an activist! With the advent of social media it is easier than ever to find petitions to sign that help create or upgrade the laws supporting the rights of animals. They need your voice to be heard.
-Learn what the ASPCA defines as abuse. If you see abuse, report it.
-Adopt a pet from your local animal shelter, they have many wonderful pets to choose from. Seek out a responsible breeder and report those who are not. Do not buy from so called "puppy mills", the news is full of stories about the abuse they inflict on these helpless creatures.
-Educate your children and others about abuse.
-Don't allow your pets to be in harms way. Fence in your yard, avoid chaining your pet, but if you must, take them for regular walks.
-Ask your Vet about drastic tempuratures and what your pet can safely tolerate and the shelter that it needs. Remember water freezes in the Winter and they need more water in the Summer.
-Provide fresh water and food daily.
- Do not leave your pet in a hot vehicle.
-Spay or neuter your pet.
-Donate to the ASPCA and other animal welfare groups. Organizing a fund raiser for your local animal shelter is also very helpful.
