The Pineville 7th and 8th grade boys basketball team pose with their trophy after Saturday’s 64-55 win over host Middlesboro in the championship game of the 13th Region All ‘A’ Middle School Tournament. Team members include: #3 Conner Gregory, #5 Jacob Maggard, #10 Isaiah Morris, #11 Cameron Hoskins, #12 Kaiden Robbins, #13 Nassir Wilson, #21 Dylan Abner, #30 Logunn Littles, #31 Noah Mason, #33 Sawyer Thompson, #35 Ashton Moser, and #42 Brady Phipps. The team is coached by Scott Jeffrey and assistant Mark Moser.

The Pineville Middle School boys basketball team improved to 18-2 on the season as they captured the 13th Region All ‘A’ Conference Tournament championship on Saturday by defeating host Middlesboro 64-55 in overtime.

“Middlesboro played very well. We got down early, called a timeout and got ourselves dialed back in,” Pineville coach Scott Jeffrey said. “We had the lead at halftime and then fell behind again. We got ourselves back together and got it to overtime. Then in overtime we played basketball.”

Sawyer Thompson led the way for the Mountain Lions by pouring in a game-high 39 points.

Jeffrey said the team’s success this season has been a bit of a surprise and credits the hard work of his players for making it happen.

“This season has really been a surprise. We lost six eighth graders off last year’s team and only had four kids returning,” he said. “Dag gone, they’ve came to work every day and we’ve ended up with 18 wins and two losses so far on the season. It’s really been a blessing, the kids’ effort has been amazing.”

The young Mountain Lions will be back in action in mid January with the 13th Region Tournament taking place at Whitley County High School.
