At the historic Middlesboro Country Club, local golfers teed off to help students attend college. Fifteen four-player teams took part in the second annual Golf Scramble for Students held by Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College (SKCTC) on Friday, May 10.

The event raised money for the college’s emergency fund which benefits students facing unexpected hardships as they complete their college degree.  Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) served as the corporate sponsor for this year’s tournament. The gold sponsor was JRL Coal.

Cumberland Ford generously offered a 2019 EcoSport as the prize for the hole-in-one competition. Unfortunately, says SKCTC President Dr. Vic Adams, “no one drove home in a new vehicle.”

The first place winning team was Lincoln Memorial University: Steve Evans, Dave Gardner, Cody McDowell, and Dan Burns. Soapy J’s—Jeff Bowling, Dwayne Barnes, Joe Stamper, and Jerry Shoffner—took home second, and S&S Service—Kevin Simpson, Jon Estep, Jeff Tingle, Matt Smith—won third. Emily Francis with ARH won the longest drive. Michael Collins with Ideal Print Shop won closest to the pin.

“We are grateful to our sponsors and all the teams who participated in this year’s tournament,” says Dr. Adams. “Congratulations to our winners. And as always, the true winners are our students.”
